Progress at our renovation and addition in Newton!
When adding on to a house, it's important to consider how to be both inspired by/blend in with what's there, and how to create something that suits modern life and tastes.
Here, the existing house, built in the 1920s and added on to in the 1940s and 60s and 80s and so on, needed a lot of internal reorganizing to make things work - the kitchen, for example, was split into two rooms...! There were steps and levels everywhere, and there was no storage.
This small addition became the catalyst for fixing all those problems, an "engine" that makes the rest of the house hum - all with an exterior shape that's inspired by what's there. The steep gables are the same angle as the main house, while the volume doesn't overwhelm the massing of the rest of the house. But there are changes - it's not the 1920 anymore - and we can do big banks of windows, double height space, and clean, simple lines. Oh - and the kitchen is now all in one room 😂
Stay tuned! 🛠️♥️ - Marilyn
