Before + After: Designing a Light-Filled, Spacious Porch

Swipe for before!

Here's a situation where *removing* interior space was the answer. This second floor porch had a weird mudroom addition that made the exterior space of the porch unusable, so we took it out!

We also designed a new roof for the porch (which was previously open to the sky - aka wind and sun), complete with skylights and the traditional sky blue ceiling color - the result is a light-filled, dramatic, relaxing space for the homeowner and their beautiful plants!

This project had some challenges - the house and lot is in *two* different zoning districts, making the already complicated math we have to do for a zoning variance even more complicated. But, it's a good reminder that pursuing variances isn't the end of the world, and if you have the time, can be well worth the extra effort! ❤️🛠️- Marilyn
