The Beauty of Older Buildings

We've been working on this particular project for quite a while - sometimes it's the smallest ones that are the most complicated!

And while we're talking about complicated projects, renovations are definitely more complicated and costly than building new - so why do we bother? Why don't we just knock stuff over and start over, if that's cheaper?

Well, older buildings offer a lot of richness, possibility, and inspiration, even in their quirkiest moments. There are layers and stories to uncover and interpret, and there is a gravitas that older buildings develop - buildings that have served generations of people, families, and friends deserve to be honored! Even the humble ones, like this little outbuilding on a farm.

Keeping older buildings, and figuring out to reuse them, is an important part of being a good steward not just of our heritage and history, but also of our resources - even the most humble old buildings are built from stronger lumber than we have today.

All that said, we don't believe in copying the look of old buildings - we're pretty contemporary around here - but we do believe in learning from, and being inspired by, builders of the past - and we also believe in making new spaces that feel both fresh *and* appropriate to their historical contexts. ❤️🛠️
